Exhibition summary

This exhibition, 'We Transfer,' by Mark Leckey and Alessandro Raho, explores the concept of transformation and the interplay between virtual and real existence. It features short animations on LED screens and oil paintings, delving into themes of perception, personal memory grids, and iconic imagery.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'We Transfer,' presented by Mark Leckey and Alessandro Raho, centers on the multifaceted ideas of transformation, conversion, and transcendence. Leckey, described as the 'artist of the YouTube generation,' uses the concept of a personal 'autistic grid' to explore how digital technologies and algorithms influence our consciousness and reality, suggesting that these frameworks can evoke chaotic, irrational elements rather than purely rationalizing us. The exhibition showcases selected images from Leckey's personal grid displayed on ten LED screens as looping animations. These visuals range from scenes in popular culture like Disney's Pinocchio and a Dragqueen, to natural elements such as the full moon, and abstract forms like an inflated RGB grid. A recurring motif is the 'dot,' appearing in various forms across the screens and prints, symbolizing light, pollution maps, and printing techniques. A key figure in the exhibition is a man in a polka-dot dress and hat, kneeling and seemingly pleading for salvation. Leckey interprets this figure from Billy Wilder's film 'One, Two, Three' as an embodiment of ecstatic change. This motif is explored across various media, including large-format prints, GIF animations, video, and oil paintings by Alessandro Raho. Raho, invited by Leckey, integrates this figure into a 'family portrait' arrangement in the Graphic Cabinet, paying close attention to the clothing of his subjects, where patterned t-shirts and suits become images within images. The exhibition also features a film room presenting Louise Bourgeois' 'Nature Study' (1984) subjected to a 3D animation in Leckey's new video 'Degradations' (2015), showcasing the material's unusual properties. Daily screenings of selected videos, including 'Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore' (1999), offer further insight into Leckey's exploration of British subculture and dance history. Mark Leckey's diverse practice merges installation, sculpture, video, and sound with pop culture, particularly British subcultures, examining cultural identity in a consumer-driven society and the impact of digital technologies on human relationships with the world.
