This exhibition showcases interventions by students from the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, exploring the theme of 'Absence' within the permanent collection of the Sigmund Freud Museum. Twelve students present sculptures, paintings, animated drawings, and installations that engage with psychoanalytic concepts and the historical interior of Berggasse 19.
FORT/DA, a collaborative exhibition with the University of Applied Arts Vienna, presents interventions in the Sigmund Freud Museum's permanent collection, centered around the theme of 'Absence'. Twelve students from the Class of Judith Eisler (Painting and Animated Film) have created works that engage with the museum's historical interior at Berggasse 19, exploring concepts such as the uncanny, the unconscious, and dreams. The interventions include sculptures, paintings, animated drawings, and installations displayed in the mezzanine, raised ground floor, and courtyard.
The artists' works address the forced absence of Freud's person and belongings, and their impact on the current presentation of the museum. Rather than focusing on memory, these pieces articulate questions and associations related to what is visible and what remains unseen. Absence, as implied by a lack, is awakened by the longing for what might be missing. Through various materials like dust, clay, projection, paint, glass, and metal, the students create works that identify absence as presence and breakage as possibility. The exhibition generates a sense of what might have been through the interplay of intervention, representation, and distance within the museum spaces.
