Exhibition summary

This archival collection, known as 'Altes Parteiarchiv (1)', comprises preserved and returned materials from the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria up to 1934. It includes crucial records such as meeting protocols, political materials from the parliamentary club, and archives of the Republikanischer Schutzbund.

Curatorial context

The 'Altes Parteiarchiv (1)' represents the portion of the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria's archive that survived and was returned to the party. This collection was largely handed over to VGA by Friedrich Adler in 1959, having been successively moved abroad by Fritz Adler starting in late 1933 due to its sensitive nature. The archive is not entirely complete but substantially includes protocols from party executive and council meetings from the early 1890s to 1933. It also contains political materials from the Club of Social Democratic Parliamentary Deputies spanning 1907–1933, and a high-quality organizational and strategy archive of the Republikanischer Schutzbund. In 1994, the archive was significantly enhanced by the addition of a complete, previously thought lost, protocol from the extraordinary party congress of October 1933. This collection is considered unique historical source material, highly valued by the party leadership.
