Curatorial context
Located in the historic Palais Erzherzog Karl in Vienna's city center, the Haus der Musik invites visitors on a musical journey. The museum allows guests to observe composers like Strauss and Mozart at work, engage with contemporary musicians, and explore the future of digital music and virtual reality. Across its four floors, the museum delves into sound and auditory phenomena, offering interactive experiences such as the 'Sonotopia Lap & Universe' virtual reality experience, computer installations, and the 'Walzer-Würfel-Spiel' where visitors can compose their own waltz.
The 'Facing Mozart' installation allows visitors to virtually step into Mozart's shoes using facial tracking, while 'NAMADEUS' converts names into Mozart interpretations. A virtual conductor installation lets visitors try their hand at leading the Vienna Philharmonic, with comedic critiques for incorrect tempo. The 'Stairplay - Music Step by Step' transforms the palace's grand staircase into an interactive piano. A dedicated floor explores the lives and works of Viennese classical composers like Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Johann Strauss Sohn, and Gustav Mahler, featuring their holograms and context.
The museum also houses the Museum of the Vienna Philharmonic, showcasing the orchestra's history with documents, conducting batons, and a display of its founding decree. Visitors can learn about the orchestra's founders and early conductors in the Nicolai Room and view exhibits in the Spiegelsaal.
