Curatorial context
The Porcelain Museum in Augarten, housed in a former imperial pleasure building, offers a comprehensive journey through the history of Viennese porcelain. The first part of the museum details the origins of porcelain in China and its spread to European courts, as well as the establishment of the first Viennese porcelain manufactory in 1718 by Claudius Innocentius du Paquier. The collection features Baroque porcelain from the founder, as well as pieces from the Rococo, Classicism, and Biedermeier periods, culminating in the famous Imperial Semmel. The museum then delves into the 20th and 21st centuries, highlighting the re-establishment of the Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten in 1923 and the influence of modern designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Walter Bosse, and Hertha Bucher on the production of the 1920s and 1930s. The display also showcases the simple aesthetics of the 1950s and works by Arik Brauer from the 1970s, concluding with contemporary designers like Philipp Bruni who continue the tradition. An original kiln spans both exhibition levels, and the complex is complemented by a shop and restaurant.
