Curatorial context

Marking a pivotal era in Western European art, the late 19th century witnessed the dawn of modernism, characterized by the Secession movements that broke away from perceived outdated artistic norms. This exhibition, a collaborative project between the Wien Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin, delves into the artistic ruptures and new associations formed in Vienna, Munich, and Berlin. Key figures such as Gustav Klimt in Vienna, Franz von Stuck in Munich, and Max Liebermann in Berlin spearheaded these movements, which overlapped in time and personnel, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas. The exhibition, located in the special exhibition rooms on the 4th floor of the Wien Museum, presents a fresh perspective on these three Secessiones, emphasizing their often-overlooked commonalities, mutual influences, and the interconnectedness of their members. Featuring around 140 paintings, sculptures, and graphics from approximately 80 artists, the collection includes significant national and international masterpieces. Notably, the Berlin movement is highlighted as the only one that also exhibited works by women. The exhibition showcases rare thematic commonalities and provides insight into how these artists inspired each other and established new artistic communities.
