Dedicated to Wiener Aktionismus, considered Austria's most important contribution to 20th-century art, this museum in Vienna's city center presents different aspects of this once taboo-breaking art movement through rotating exhibitions. The museum was established in 2024 by private art collectors who have amassed the largest collection of works related to Wiener Aktionismus. This collection includes visual art, photographs, films, sketches, and graphics from the actions primarily by the four key protagonists: Hermann Nitsch, Günter Brus, Otto Mühl, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. The works span from 1957 to 1973, with the 1960s as the core period. A small portion of the extensive collection, comprising 17,000 exhibits, is displayed on two levels.
The museum highlights Wiener Aktionismus as a complex and multifaceted art movement, emphasizing the individual styles of its protagonists and its significant artistic quality beyond its radical nature. To support visitor understanding, the museum offers a comprehensive educational program, including numerous guided tours, a digital guide, and trained museum staff available to answer questions.
