Tracing the Global Journeys of Bruges Artists: The Apprentice-Master II Research Initiative
Musea Brugge has concluded its two-year research initiative, Apprentice-Master II, which ran from June 2024 through May 2026. This comprehensive project investigated the international paths taken by artists who trained at the Bruges Academy during the 19th century. After completing their initial schooling, many of these creators left Belgium to perfect their techniques in major European cultural centers, with a notable number settling in Rome.

Supported by the Flemish government, the initiative brought together several academic and heritage partners, including the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA), Academie Brugge DKO, Ghent University, the University of Antwerp, and the Royal Library of Belgium.
