Both of these rare panels depict narrative scenes from the lives of Saint James and Saint John. Although the original workshop and the identity of the artist who painted them remain a mystery, historical records show that both works belonged to a single art dealer in London in 1909.
Shortly after, their paths diverged. One panel was acquired for the municipal collection in Bruges, while the other was purchased by the noted Japanese art collector Kojiro Matsukata, eventually finding its home at the National Museum of Western Art (NMWA) in Tokyo.

This rare reunion marks the first time these two pieces have been exhibited together in Belgium. They were previously reunited for a successful exhibition in Tokyo, and now the Japanese loan has traveled to Europe.
