Exhibition summary
This exhibition explores the scientific and artistic properties of mirrors, inviting visitors to investigate how they reflect, distort, and manipulate light. Through interactive modules, the display combines mathematics, physics, and geometry to explain concepts such as reflection, symmetry, and the role of telescopes in space exploration.
Curatorial context
Mirrors - Inside and Outside Reality is a central exhibition at the UC Exploratório, developed in collaboration with the 'la Caixa' Foundation and BPI. The exhibition invites visitors of all ages to step into a world of reflection, challenging perceptions of reality similar to Alice’s journey in the classic tales of Lewis Carroll. Through a series of immersive installations, visitors can experiment with flat, curved, and kaleidoscopic mirrors to understand the fundamental laws of light, the mathematics of symmetry, and the science of optics.
The exhibition extends beyond simple reflection, demonstrating how mirrors are essential in technological and scientific applications. Visitors can explore how light is controlled to solve practical problems, such as bringing sunlight to shaded valleys, and learn about the crucial role of retroreflectors in lunar missions and precision distance measurements. Further sections focus on telescopes like the Hubble and the James Webb, which use mirrors to capture light from the distant past, as well as the properties of invisible infrared radiation. By blending hands-on experiments with historical artistic techniques like anamorphism, the exhibition offers a comprehensive look at how mirrors shape our understanding of the universe.
