Museo Casa Natal Picasso Highlights Female Artists in New Málaga Exhibition
The Museo Casa Natal Picasso in Málaga is hosting a temporary exhibition titled "Neither Muses nor Models: Female Artists in the Collections of the Museo Casa Natal Picasso." Running until September 13 in the museum's Temporary Exhibition Hall, this showcase reevaluates the role of women in art, shifting them from the position of passive subjects or inspirations to active creators.
What Visitors Can See at the Málaga Exhibition
The exhibition brings together more than 40 pieces created by approximately 30 female artists. The collection spans several decades, from the 1970s through the early years of the 21st century, showcasing a wide range of artistic mediums such as painting, sculpture, and graphic arts.
Visitors to the exhibition will encounter works by prominent international and Spanish creators, including:
- Dorothea Tanning
- Helen Frankenthaler
- Marisol Escobar
- María Elena Vieira da Silva
- Roser Bru
- Hannah Collins
- Marisa González
- Susana Solano
Rather than presenting these works as a secondary collection, the exhibition integrates them into major contemporary artistic dialogues. The displays explore themes such as abstraction, personal and collective memory, the body as a political landscape, technological experimentation, and the evolving nature of identity.
Redefining the Collection of Picasso’s Birthplace
All the items featured in "Neither Muses nor Models" are drawn directly from the permanent holdings of the Museo Casa Natal Picasso. Many of these pieces entered the museum's collection through donations from collectors and the artists themselves.
By gathering these works into a single dedicated exhibition, which is supported by the Fundación ”la Caixa”, the museum highlights a narrative that has often remained in the background. It invites visitors to consider how the history of art and museum collections are shaped when female voices are brought from the periphery to the center of the gallery space.
