Museo Casa Natal Picasso of Málaga Sends Major Masterpiece Exhibition to Macau
The Museo Casa Natal Picasso is bringing a extensive collection of original works to an international audience. The exhibition, titled Picasso: Beauty and Drama, is set to open in Macau, China, showcasing the rich creative evolution of the Málaga-born artist alongside intimate photographic archives.
Organized directly by the birthplace museum, this exhibition runs from July 20 to October 26 at the Grand Lisboa Palace. The showcase is a major highlight of the Macao International Art Biennale, bringing Malaga's cultural heritage to a global stage.
What Visitors Can Expect from the Málaga Collection
Curated by Mario Virgilio Montañez, the exhibition features 141 original works spanning half a century of artistic creation. The collection is drawn entirely from the permanent holdings of the Museo Casa Natal in Málaga.
Instead of a simple chronological display, the exhibition is organized into thematic sections designed to give visitors a deeper understanding of the artist's varied interests:
- Classical Mythology and Beauty: A look at his connection to Greco-Roman traditions, featuring representations of fauns, centaurs, and classical forms.
- Revolutionary Ceramics: An exploration of how the artist adopted and reinvented ceramic techniques, blending traditional methods with modern creative energy after the Second World War.
- Personal and Lifelong Themes: Dedicated spaces focusing on the companions who influenced his life, his passion for bullfighting, and the dramatic, visceral works of his final years.
Complementing these pieces are intimate photographs taken by Juan Gyenes. These portraits provide a rare, personal glimpse into the artist's daily life and creative environment during his mature years.
Fostering Creative Exchange Between Málaga and Macau
The collaboration extends beyond the exhibition galleries. Thanks to a partnership between the Málaga City Council and SJM Resorts, two local contemporary artists from Málaga, Sheila Cañestro and Cyro García, have been selected for artistic residencies in Macau.
Running from July to September, these residencies allow local creators to develop new projects abroad, strengthening the cultural bridge between the Andalusian city and the international art scene.
