Curatorial context
The permanent ethnographical exhibition "Czech Folk Culture" offers an in-depth look at the life of Czech rural communities across Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia, spanning the 18th century to the first half of the 20th century. The exhibition is structured into three main sections. The first section focuses on everyday life, highlighting material culture through artifacts and tools of folk craftsmen, artisans, and farmers, alongside displays of folk ceramics, traditional dwellings, rural festivals, and folk art, including costumes and textiles. The second section immerses visitors in the folk customs, rituals, and festivities that marked the traditional calendar year, from spring celebrations like Easter to summer and autumn events such as harvests and pilgrimages, and winter traditions like Saint Nicholas Day and Christmas. The third section examines the rituals and customs connected to the entire life cycle, including birth, christening, weddings, and funerals, and features three dedicated folk artisan workshops (ceramics, textile, woodcarver) with regular demonstrations of traditional crafts and trades.
