Curatorial context

The Pantheon of the National Museum, designed by architect Josef Schulz in 1890, is an architecturally sublime ceremonial hall. Its interior is richly decorated with wall art, portals, and tiles, and it houses a significant portrait gallery featuring 54 bronze statues and busts, along with two marble busts of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth. The vaulted ceilings display monumental lunettes by František Ženíšek and paintings by Vojtěch Hynais, depicting themes of Czech history and culture. The glass-painted dome, recently restored, centers on the figure of Bohemia. Originally conceived for ceremonial gatherings and as a departure point for funeral processions of national figures, the Pantheon remains a central and impressive space within the National Museum.
