Curatorial context

The Archive of Fine Arts has long been committed to preserving Czech and Slovak typography, amassing a collection of over 30,000 volumes. Since 2014, the BOOKS series has been dedicated to exceptional typographic works from these regions. The exhibition 'BOOKS 6+7 Edition' specifically presents the two most recently published volumes within this series. The "Mladé cesty" series (6th volume of BOOKS) was initiated in 1961 by Mladá fronta, featuring paperback volumes with flaps and illustrations designed by UMPRUM students. The prose segment of this series, starting with the 6th volume, presented unique graphic design by Jiří Rathouský in soft cloth bindings, influenced by 1960s experimental art. The "Slovak Poetry and Open Windows" series (7th volume of BOOKS) marks the first time the series focuses on exceptional editions from Slovakia, published by Slovenský spisovateľ. These series are notable for their literary execution and visual quality, featuring designs by Slovak artists from the 1960s and 1970s. The "Slovenská poézia" series featured original lithographs, with art consultation by Albín Brunovský and cover designs by artists like Miroslav Cipár and Agneša Sigetová. The "Otvorené okná" series utilized Ladislav Hruškovič for typography and Rudolf Krivoš for dust jackets and bindings, with striking collages by artists such as Andrej Barčík and Rudolf Fila.
