Exhibition summary

This exhibition spans three centuries of Bohemian and Czechoslovak porcelain, tracing its artistic evolution and typical forms across various eras. It highlights the transformations in shape and pattern on both dinnerware and decorative porcelain, responding to changing stylistic fashions and industry demands.

Curatorial context

Although Bohemian porcelain emerged when European porcelain centers had already passed their Rococo and Classical peaks, it quickly developed its own distinct character. Initially drawing on foreign forms, by 1820, Bohemian porcelain achieved superb artisan quality, rivaling the best European offerings and developing its unique takes on Biedermeier and Rococo Revival styles. From its beginnings around Carlsbad, the industry rapidly diversified, serving both luxury markets and everyday consumers. Porcelain became a key export for the nascent Czechoslovak Republic, gaining international recognition in the 1920s and 1950s. This exhibition delves into this three-century journey through the lens of artistic evolution and typical forms, examining transformations in shape and pattern on dinnerware and decorative pieces. It underscores the porcelain factories' adaptability to contemporary trends, the quest for original designs, and the crucial role of designers in both historical and modern mass production, emphasizing the essential relationship between designers and forward-thinking producers.
