Curatorial context
Jan Glozar's 'Portraits' series, largely created between 1986 and 1988, captures distinctive individuals from Czech society who diverged from the prescribed social template. These photographs, often accompanied by authentic statements or encounter descriptions, showcase figures like an unhappy janitor, a proud collector of Karel Gott memorabilia, and the widow of a bird woodcarver. The exhibition also features notable individuals such as the well-known Countess, Mancika (a snake lover and partner of musician Binny Laney), and Svatý Vincent (Vincent Venera), a painter and musician known for his conspicuous presence in Prague. Glozar's work is noted for its personal approach to 'lost souls' and societal underdogs, drawing inspiration from photographers like Diane Arbus, yet infused with Central European irony and hyperbole.
Premiering at this exhibition is 'Vltavěnka', an extraordinary and raw photographic cycle of an old woman living in her own world near the Slapy Dam. This display, accompanied by artefacts loaned by Pablo de Sax, highlights Glozar's sensitivity in approaching and gaining acceptance from his subjects, even those considered complicated.
