Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Josef Koudelka – Ruins' showcases the artist's latest series, comprising photographs taken over many years, from 1991 to 2017, at more than 200 archaeological sites in the Mediterranean region. These sites span countries including Albania, Algeria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, and Turkey. While some photographs from the 'Ruins' series were previously exhibited in the 'Returning' retrospective at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague in 2017, this exhibition focuses specifically on this extensive project. A Czech-English volume, featuring articles by art historian Tomáš Pospěch and archaeologist Alain Schnapp, accompanies the current exhibition. This publication includes a curated selection of 40 pictures, mirroring the large panoramic photographs displayed. The photographs in the 'Ruins' project are part of a significant donation of roughly 2,500 photographs, representing Koudelka's life's work, which he has gifted to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague over the past few years. The exhibition design is by Jan Roháč, and the graphic design is by Aleš Najbrt. The exhibition is curated by Tomáš Pospěch.
