Curatorial context

The exhibition "Josef Sudek - Glass Labyrinths" showcases the multifaceted relationship between the renowned Czech photographer Josef Sudek and glass objects. Having lost an arm in World War I, Sudek's artistic journey led him to explore glass in various forms from the 1920s onwards. During his studies at the State School of Graphic Arts in Prague, he began photographing landscapes, city scenes, and his first staged still life compositions that featured glass. His work in the interwar period saw him become a sought-after publicity photographer, particularly through his collaborations between 1928 and 1938 with the Družstevní práce publishing house and its 'Krásná jizba' trade branch. Within this context, Sudek expertly staged glass products designed by notable figures such as Ladislav Sutnar and Ludvika Smrčková. These arrangements, presented in neat rows and groups, adhered to the principles of Functionalist purity and the demands of commercial advertising. The exhibition thus illuminates Sudek's artistic vision in capturing the forms and essence of glass within the aesthetic frameworks of his time.
