Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the influential 'Krásná jizba' (Beautiful Room) initiative, a key Czech institution from the first half of the 20th century that championed Functionalism in design. It highlights how the initiative aimed to democratize living standards through the production and sale of high-quality, affordable utility objects and furnishings.

Curatorial context

Established in late 1927 as a branch of the Družstevní práce publishing house, 'Krásná jizba' (Beautiful Room) was a leading Czech institution dedicated to interior design and culture during the first half of the 20th century. It served as a vital platform for promoting Functionalist principles and advocating for the quality mass production of utility objects, acting as an arbiter of practical and tasteful living. The institution's activities in sales, production, exhibition, and consulting significantly impacted the daily lives of thousands of families. By focusing on home accessories and furnishings that combined high aesthetic and utility value with affordability, Krásná jizba strived to fulfill democratic ideals within the culture of living. The exhibition showcases the contributions of prominent figures from the era's cultural scene, including designers like Ladislav Sutnar and Antonín Kybal, and architect Jan E. Koula. Despite its successful First-Republic era, the initiative struggled to continue its vision after World War II, with its original ideas concluding with the country's altered political landscape in 1948.
