The exhibition 'Residence: Prefab Estate' presents a comprehensive history of selected residential complexes in the Czech Republic, tracing their development from the late 1940s through to the early 1990s. It contextualizes the construction of these housing estates within the prevailing social, political, cultural, and economic circumstances of the era. The exhibition includes a look at the later attempts to 'humanize' prefabricated buildings and current perspectives from architects and historians. Visitors will encounter plans, models, and historic photographs sourced from various institutions and private collections across the Czech Republic, alongside items from the fields of art, interior design, and industrial design to illustrate the broader historical context. The exhibition aims to provide a fundamental overview of different construction types, significant structural systems, and the evolution of technical capabilities within the building industry. This exhibition is the result of a research project investigating over seventy Czech housing estates, their urban design, and resident demographics, while also considering the industrialization of mass housing construction, political and economic shifts in socialist Czechoslovakia, and the changing roles of architects and urban planners. The study integrates material from various humanistic disciplines, including art history, architecture, planning, anthropology, heritage protection, and historical demography.
