Exhibition summary

This exhibition commemorates 80 years since the introduction of the Nuremberg Laws in Bohemia and Moravia. It showcases items belonging to victims of Nazi persecution, aiming to restore their original owners' identities and lives.

Curatorial context

Held to mark 80 years since the introduction of the Nuremberg Laws in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, 'Returning Identity' displays items belonging to victims of Nazi persecution. These items, originally owned by individuals classified as Jews, were seized during a period of intense social and property-related persecution that culminated in deportation to concentration camps. The exhibition, organized in collaboration with several institutions, presents around a hundred named original owners, highlighting that this is a small fraction of those murdered. The items, often not collector's items but personal belongings from homes, serve to partially restore the identities of individuals whose names were systematically replaced with transport numbers. The exhibition emphasizes the unique lives of these individuals—rich and poor, educated and less so, with families or alone—and the tragic circumstances that led to their persecution and the loss of their property. These artifacts are valuable not just as museum exhibits, but as silent commemorations of lives lost, helping to restore names and identities after many years.
