Curatorial context

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, renowned modern art exhibitions were held under the 'Topič Salon' name at the Art Nouveau building of Pojišťovna Praha. The publisher František Topič established an exhibition hall specifically for these purposes. In 1897, this venue hosted a travelling exhibition by Alphonse Mucha, marking his first solo exhibition in Prague and introducing Art Nouveau to the city. The exhibition featured posters created for Sarah Bernhardt, such as 'Gismonda' and 'Lorenzaccio,' which were instrumental in Mucha's rise to fame. Alongside his posters, Mucha's book illustrations were also displayed. Later, in 1905, the Topič publishing house and art salons relocated to an adjacent building designed by architect Osvald Polívka.
