This exhibition, running from July 11 to October 6, 2019, offers an alternate overview of Czech art between 1918 and 1989. It features 30 visual artists, exploring their steadfastness in their artistic path and its connection to political and social contexts, inspired by the work of Franz Kafka.
Marking the thirtieth anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, 'The Steadfast – From Franz Kafka to the Velvet Revolution' provides a unique perspective on Czech art from 1918 to 1989. In collaboration with the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery and the Museum of Czech Literature, curators Zuzana and Eugen Brikcius have brought together 30 visual artists, examining their unwavering commitment to their artistic vision. This steadfastness is presented not only in a political or social sense but also as a deep faith in their individual artistic journeys.
The exhibition delves into the influence of Franz Kafka's metaphysical work, critical thinking, and responsible social attitude on a wide range of artists. Alongside their visual creations, the exhibition showcases their exclusive verbal expressions, including verses, diary notes, quotes, and interviews. Featured artists include prominent figures such as Otto Gutfreund, Jindřich Štýrský, Toyen, Josef Čapek, Mikuláš Medek, Stanislav Kolíbal, Eva Kmentová, Karel Nepraš, and Jiří Kolář, offering a rich exploration of Czech artistic resilience and intellectual depth.
