Curatorial context
The artistic creation of František Kyncl reflects a compelling conflict between rationalism and intuition, order and chance, embodying the characteristic uncertainties of the late 20th century. Influenced by constructivism and the German group Zero, Kyncl began creating works in the 1970s using skewers and bamboo sticks, as well as three-dimensional objects. These works often take geometric forms such as triangles, squares, and circles, or grow organically in multiple directions, resulting in fragile structures resembling grids, nets, and cobweb-like clusters. These 'Spatial structures' refract and reflect light, making light an integral part of the artwork. Kyncl himself described these pieces as a 'picture of society and of how people behave to each other.' From the late 1980s onwards, his focus shifted to drawing, which moved away from geometric forms, becoming more expressive and incorporating figurative elements.
Born in Pardubice in 1934, František Kyncl left Czechoslovakia in 1968 and settled in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1969. During his studies, he became integrated into the Düsseldorf art scene, aligning with radical art movements of the era. He became acquainted with prominent artists such as Günther Uecker, Norbert Krick, and Joseph Beuys. His works were exhibited in significant venues like the Düsseldorf Kunstverein and the Hans Mayer Gallery. Kyncl passed away in Düsseldorf in 2011. The exhibition at Museum Kampa presents the artist's work in its full, many-sided complexity.
