Curatorial context

Vladimír Houdek's exhibition "Set of All Movements" presents works created in 2023 and 2024, which are all identically untitled, defined by their belonging to a specific theme and creative stage. The exhibition draws inspiration from artificialism, Suprematism, and Kandinsky's reflections on spirituality, using books and maps as guiding materials. Houdek's artistic process involves meticulous layering, drying, cutting, and removal of acrylic paint, complemented by gouache and collage. The paintings feature the spectrum of colors, particularly yellow, set against glowing alabaster and black expanses, with his characteristic geometry evoking scientific language, abstraction, and concepts like Saturn's rings and Dürer's "Melencolia." His art moves between illusion, parable, geometry, collage, matter, concept, and knowledge, pulsating with an active mind. Houdek (born 1984) is an important figure in contemporary Central European art. His work, characterized by its geometric yet expressive nature, has been influenced by his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Vladimír Skrepl, and collaborations with Jan Merta and Silke Otto-Knapp. He is a recipient of the Critic’s Prize for Young Painting (2010) and the Jindřich Chalupecký Award (2012).
