Exhibition summary

This exhibition at Museum Kampa presented a significant, rediscovered relief by Karel Malich, created between 1978 and 1980. It also featured his 'Black and White Sculpture' from 1964-1965 and a cross-section of his recent three-dimensional works from 2010 to 2015.

Curatorial context

Museum Kampa, in cooperation with the Zdeněk Sklenář Gallery, unveiled a significant world premiere: a relief by Karel Malich created for a university accommodation hall canteen in Plzen between 1978 and 1980. This unique work, depicting the relationship between the human figure and swirling wind, had been forgotten until its rediscovery by the Plzen group Křížky a vetřelci. The exhibition complemented this monumental piece with the 'Black and White Sculpture' (1964–1965), which was notably exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in 1967, and a selection of Malich’s three-dimensional works produced between 2010 and 2015. After dedicating over a decade exclusively to drawing, Malich's return to three-dimensional art, resulting in nearly eighty new sculptures, was a notable development. These wall-hung and suspended sculptures, crafted from steel wire and plywood, demonstrate Malich's continued exploration of space through simple, geometrical forms pregnant with deep personal and cultural significance.
