This exhibition showcases the work of Kateřina Černá, who transitioned from painting to assemblage using tempera, ink, fabric scraps, lace, and other mixed media. Her art explores dreamlike realities, the feminine world, and nostalgic cityscapes, including Prague as seen from the Vltava River.
Born in Prague in 1937, Kateřina Černá studied at the Academy of Fine Arts before shifting from painting to assemblage. Her unique artistic language employs tempera, ink, fabric scraps, lace, ribbons, strings, beads, and even silver foil, creating pieces that evoke a primal and universal dreamlike reality intertwined with the mystery of the feminine world. The exhibition delves into her 'peaceful, shaggy gardens' that recall mythical lands of amazons and nymphs, as well as pleasant landscapes reminiscent of childhood carousels and meadows. Černá also translates her paintings into linocut and etching, compiled into complete books filled with memories, dreams, and stories. These works, often combined with literary text, are presented alongside ephemera like exhibition invitations, poems, and personal letters, creating a rich narrative tapestry that combines visual art with storytelling.
