Curatorial context

Museum Kampa is showcasing "Landscapes of time," an exhibition dedicated to the celebrated graphic artist, painter, and photographer Pravoslav Sovak. Rather than a strict chronological retrospective, the exhibition emphasizes the internal affinities between works from different periods of Sovak's life, tracing his approach to recurring themes. The central theme explored is urban space, with works ranging from early graphics inspired by Paris to almost abstract oil paintings from the 1960s and the "Walls" series, which draws from large Western metropolises. The exhibition also features "Installation Imaginaire," a series refining the theme of the city, and for the first time in the Czech Republic, Sovak's extensive drawings of landscapes, coasts, cityscapes, and abstract compositions are presented. These subtle works, created with a complex combination of pencil, pen, watercolor, and gouache, are described as almost a record of time's passage. Significant figural themes are also represented, including the "Indirect Messages" series (1970-1972), a synthesis of human feelings during new beginnings, which was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Another notable series, "Museums," depicts gallery spaces, visitors, and artworks in a dynamic interplay, reflecting on how art is displayed. Sovak's "Deserts, Walls," and "Beauties" are recognized as significant contributions to graphic media in recent decades, characterized by a specific form of compound images where visual and temporal layers fuse, showcasing his exceptional imagination and technical skills. Visitors can experience Sovak's unique artistic perfection, inspiring content, and the special sensitivity, nostalgia, and humor often associated with his Central European origin.
