Exhibition summary

This exhibition focuses exclusively on the floral still lifes of Václav Špála, a significant segment of his oeuvre that has been historically overlooked. It aims to re-evaluate these works from a contemporary perspective, highlighting their artistic qualities and significance.

Curatorial context

Although floral still lifes constitute the most extensive part of Václav Špála’s oeuvre, they have never before been presented in a dedicated exhibition. Previous exhibitions and specialist literature have often dismissed them as a less interesting segment of his work. However, this exhibition, running from February 14 to May 17, 2026, offers a new perspective, enabling a re-evaluation of Špála’s floral still lifes. Contemporary art allows for fresh appreciation of aspects that modernism might have overlooked, bringing renewed significance to variations on a theme, craftsmanship, and temporality. The exhibition marks the forgotten anniversaries of Špála’s birth and death, presenting over eighty paintings from public and private collections, featuring works from the 1920s to the 1940s. Špála himself graded his nearly eight hundred floral still lifes, and ten of his highest-rated works, marked "rare" or "primissima," will be on display.

Admission and ticket notes

The exhibition will be held on the upper floor of the Sova's Mills building. Specific ticketing information is not detailed on this page, but visitors are generally directed to museum admission details.
