Exhibition summary
This exhibition showcases the work of graphic artist Zdenka Rusová, exploring her artistic journey through ink and pen drawings, drypoint, etching, and painting. The display delves into her signature themes of opposing principles and abstract forms, reflecting her personal and artistic evolution.
Curatorial context
Zdenka Rusová, born in Prague in 1939, is celebrated as a graphic artist, sketch artist, and educator, notably the first female professor of graphic art in Norway and the first female rector of an art school in Scandinavia. Her artistic practice encompasses ink and pen drawing, drypoint, etching, other printing techniques, and painting. Initially graduating from UMPRUM in Prague with a specialization in book illustration, Rusová's early career included exhibitions in Czechoslovakia, featuring paintings of ambivalent female heads and circus-motif graphics.
A pivotal moment in her career came with an invitation to Norway, where she has lived permanently since 1970. Her Norwegian period saw the creation of abstracted paintings, often incorporating red into her earlier monochrome palette, and exploring themes of duality such as man and woman, freedom and dependence, and growth and decay. Around the year 2000, her work evolved to include generalized landscapes combined with reduced female profiles. Rusová's influence also extended to art education in Norway, where she contributed to significant reforms.
