Curatorial context

The exhibition of the history of metallurgy, titled Metals – the Path of Civilization, presents the technical and historical development of metallurgy and its relationship with the life of society, with a strong emphasis on iron. For this reason, the exhibit focuses primarily on ironworking. The development of iron-processing equipment is documented by a rebuilt Slavic Smelter from the 9th century and an original mechanical forging water hammer. The evolution of iron metallurgy in all its phases is presented through a series of models and original equipment. The industrial revolution's impact on iron production and use is illustrated with models of charcoal blast furnaces from the early 19th century and a model of the Vojtěšská smelter in Kladno, which housed the first coke blast furnace from 1856. The most modern technology is represented by a model of the continuous casting process for steel. The second part of the exposition delves into the role of iron as it intertwined with myths in antiquity, became a symbol of war, and was used for the production of useful and artistic objects. Currently, the metallurgical exhibition at the National Technical Museum is the sole comprehensive exhibition of metallurgy in the Czech Republic. Within the museum building, it connects with the Mining exhibit, highlighting the close relationship between these two fields.
