Exhibition summary

Giuseppe Verdi's tragic opera 'La traviata' explores themes of societal hypocrisy and forbidden love through the story of a courtesan, Violetta Valéry. Originally controversial for its contemporary subject matter, it has become one of Verdi's most popular and romantic works.

Curatorial context

Giuseppe Verdi’s renowned opera, 'La traviata,' has captivated audiences for over 170 years with its poignant depiction of societal morals and passionate love. Based on Alexandre Dumas’s novel "La Dame aux camélias," the opera tells the story of Violetta Valéry, a terminally ill courtesan who sacrifices her love for Alfredo Germont, a young man from a respectable family, only to die in poverty while dreaming of true happiness. This work was notably one of the first major operas to address contemporary social themes, and despite a lukewarm premiere in 1863, it has since become a globally celebrated repertoire staple. The opera features music by Giuseppe Verdi and a libretto adapted from the famous novel about Marie Duplessis, a celebrated courtesan of Parisian society in the 1840s. "La traviata" is characterized by its romantic and tragic narrative, holding a mirror to the hypocritical morals of society. Visitors can expect a running time of approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, including two 20-minute intermissions, performed in Italian with surtitles available in Czech and English.
