Exhibition summary

This event features Barbara Hannigan in her acclaimed interpretation of Francis Poulenc's opera 'La Voix humaine' at the Prague Spring festival. The performance includes a live video screening and is conducted by Hannigan herself with the Czech Philharmonic.

Curatorial context

Barbara Hannigan, the Artist-in-Residence of the Prague Spring 2026, presents a unique project featuring her own fabled interpretation of Francis Poulenc’s opera La Voix humaine. This production, a Czech premiere, incorporates live video screening by means of three cameras placed within the orchestra and a large screen behind the players. The opera, based on Jean Cocteau's text, explores a woman's final conversation with her ex-lover, delving into themes of fantasy, imagination, truth, and lies, culminating in a heartbreaking finish. Hannigan pairs Poulenc’s opera with Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings. This late, personal work by Strauss, composed as World War II was ending, is often described as an epitaph for a German culture destroyed by war. It concludes with a quotation of Beethoven's 'Marcia funebre' from the Eroica Symphony, with Strauss's inscription 'In memoriam!' on the autograph score.
