Curatorial context

Giuseppe Verdi's 'Aida' is one of his most celebrated operas, a powerful narrative of romantic love between the Egyptian warrior Radames and the enslaved Ethiopian princess Aida, set against a backdrop of war. Since its 1871 premiere, the opera has captivated audiences worldwide with its magnificent staging, opulent costumes, and compelling blend of grand spectacle and intimate personal drama. The story delves into the difficult choices faced by its protagonists: Aida's struggle between loyalty to her country and her love for an enemy, and Radames's betrayal of his homeland for Aida. Verdi was inspired by a scenario from Egyptologist Auguste Mariette and drew upon Egyptian culture, even commissioning authentic-sounding 'Aida trumpets' for the famous Triumphal March, reflecting the opera's deep connection to its setting and historical inspiration.
