Exhibition summary

Bertramka is a historic villa and museum dedicated to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Dušek family, set within a classical estate and park. It is famously known as the place where Mozart completed his opera Don Giovanni in 1787.

Curatorial context

Bertramka, originally a vineyard estate from the late 17th century, was rebuilt in the Classicist style in the latter half of the 18th century. It gained significant fame when purchased in 1784 by František Xaverius Dušek, a pianist and composer, and his wife, the opera singer Josefína Dušková. The estate is globally renowned for hosting Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1787, during which he completed his iconic opera Don Giovanni shortly before its Prague premiere. Mozart also composed the aria "Bella mia fiamma, addio" here, dedicating it to Mrs. Dušková. He visited again in 1791. The site features a permanent exposition opened on December 1, 2000, spread across seven rooms on the residential floor, two of which were occupied by Mozart. The premises have been restored to their original state and furnished with period pieces, showcasing memorabilia related to Mozart and the Dušek family, including musical instruments, manuscripts, letters, and artworks. The grounds include a garden with a sala terrena used as a concert hall, adorned with original paintings, a sandstone fountain, and a bust of Mozart.
