Curatorial context
The Clam-Gallas Palace stands as a paramount example of Prague Baroque architecture and a testament to the aristocratic life of its era. Constructed from 1713 onwards, it was built for Jan Václav Gallas, designed by the eminent Vienna architect Jan Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The palace's opulent interiors are adorned with remarkable decorations, including sculptures by Matyáš Bernard Braun and masterful frescoes by Carlo Inocenc Carlone, depicting mythological scenes and allegories on the main staircase and ceilings. These artworks, along with intricate stucco work, highlight the zenith of Baroque artistry.
This palace served not only as a residence but also as a venue for balls and concerts, hosting distinguished guests such as Mozart and Beethoven. Its historical significance is further enriched by its association with Franz Kafka, who trained there, and its later use as the Archive of the Capital City of Prague. Today, the palace is utilized as a site for exhibitions, concerts, and social events, allowing visitors to experience its historical grandeur and artistic legacy.
