Coppélia, a mesmerizing comic ballet in three acts, has captivated audiences for 154 years since its world premiere. The current production at the State Opera in Prague, first presented on May 16, 2024, is a revival of Ronald Hynd’s celebrated version, originally premiered in London in 1985.
The ballet weaves a tale of love that, unlike many Romantic ballets, concludes happily with marriage. The story centers around Doctor Coppélius, an inventor of mechanical toys, and his life-size doll, Coppélia. This beautiful 'girl' sitting on his balcony attracts the attention of the village youths, particularly Franz, who becomes so infatuated that he neglects his fiancée, Swanilda. Jealous and upset, Swanilda uncovers the truth: Coppélia is merely a doll, and Doctor Coppélius's plan to animate her with a human spirit is thwarted by Swanilda's intervention. Franz realizes his error, and the ballet culminates in Swanilda and Franz's wedding during a festive harvest celebration.
