Curatorial context

The exhibition 'DEVADE — Prague’s Architecture Amidst Discipline and Disco' delves into the often-overlooked architectural legacy of the 1990s in Prague. It challenges the tendency to dismiss this post-communist era's built environment by presenting a balanced assessment that acknowledges both the formal rigor inspired by interwar modernism and functionalism, and the free-flowing postmodernism that mirrored Western ideals. The exhibition highlights the dual public perception: the architectural community's appreciation for strict proportions and quality materials versus the public's memory of kitsch and ostentatious displays of wealth. Featuring thirty selected buildings erected in Prague between 1989 and 2004, the exhibition traces their creation against the backdrop of a changing society, including the evolving roles of professional associations and political discourse on architecture. It incorporates significant pieces such as the opulent Olga chairs by Bořek Šípek, originally designed for Prague Castle, and satirical memes by the Dynamický Blok collective that ironize the decade's aesthetics. An audiovisual loop from Czech Television archives and a collection of photographs further contextualize the buildings within the broader social and political transformations of the era, from the Velvet Revolution to the Czech Republic's EU accession. Published in conjunction with a book of the same name, the exhibition aims to foster an unprejudiced approach to understanding the 1990s.
