Curatorial context
The Trmal Villa, built between 1902 and 1903 by architect Jan Kotěra, serves as the setting for a permanent exhibition dedicated to his work and influence. Kotěra, a disciple of Otto Wagner, was a key figure in Viennese Art Nouveau and Modernism and a professor at the Academy of Art, Design and Architecture in Prague. The exhibition showcases his unique synthesis of contemporary English Modernism, Czech folk architecture, and a philosophy of comfortable, hygienic, and efficient family living, integrated with nature. It highlights his design approach, which often included furniture and interior elements, reflecting a holistic vision for domestic spaces. The Trmal Villa itself, originally designed for headmaster František Trmal, exemplifies these principles, with its carefully designed garden and picturesque architectural details.
Originally constructed as a family home with a garden, the villa has a rich history, passing through several private owners before being transferred to state ownership in 1950 for cultural and educational purposes. Following a thorough reconstruction and restoration between 1998 and 2001, the villa now houses this exhibition focusing on Kotěra's pedagogical role and his innovative approach to housing design. The exhibition provides insight into his influential career and the enduring impact of his architectural style on Czech design.
