Curatorial context

Opened in 1998, the Mucha Museum stands as the inaugural institution globally dedicated exclusively to the life and artistic contributions of the renowned Art Nouveau master, Alfons Mucha (1860-1939). Situated within the historic Baroque Kaunitz Palace, the museum spans 500 m2 and presents a significant collection of nearly 100 original works. This collection was originally assembled by the world-famous Czechoslovak tennis player, Ivan Lendl. The museum shop offers an exclusive range of gifts and posters inspired by Mucha's distinctive artistic motifs. The Kaunitz Palace itself boasts a rich history, with parts of its structure dating back to the 17th century and undergoing significant Baroque reconstruction in the early 18th century. Its interiors feature grand halls, including a notable music salon adorned with murals depicting Arthurian legends and the Song of the Nibelungs. The palace has housed various noble families and institutions before its renovation between 1996 and 1998, which prepared it for the opening of the Mucha Museum.
