Curatorial context

The Jaroslav Ježek Memorial, opened in 1989, preserves the composer's apartment and inheritance as he left it. The 'Blue Room,' designed by architect František Zelenka, is preserved with its original black Steinway piano, desk items, an extensive library of literature and music, and a tiled stove, all tailored to Ježek's needs, particularly his poor eyesight. Jaroslav Ježek (1906-1942) was a pivotal figure in Czech modern jazz and dance music, also composing classical works and scores for films by Voskovec and Werich. He was a member of the vibrant artistic scene of his time and worked at the Osvobozené divadlo (Liberated Theatre). Forced to emigrate to the USA in 1939 due to the Nazi threat, he died in New York at age 36. His legacy is honored in this memorial, which holds his estate and the very environment where he lived and created.
