Curatorial context

The Bílek Villa, built between 1910-1911 by sculptor František Bílek according to his own design, is a remarkable example of Art Nouveau architecture in Prague. The villa's architecture is deeply symbolic, inspired by the concept of a wheat field, reflecting Bílek's beliefs about the connections between nature and artistic creation. Visitors can explore Bílek's atelier, view his early studies and sketches from 1891-1903, and admire the villa's meticulously designed interior, including carved furniture and symbolic motifs. Originally Bílek's home, studio, and gallery, the villa was established as a public gallery after his death. Transferred to the City of Prague in 1963 and fully reopened after reconstruction in 1999, the Bílek Villa is now managed by the Prague City Gallery. The exposition features sculptures, drawings, and graphic sheets by František Bílek, preserving his legacy and offering a unique glimpse into his artistic world and personal philosophy within a significant architectural monument.
