Curatorial context

The House at the Stone Bell, a remarkably preserved example of Gothic palace architecture in Prague, stands as a significant monument on Old Town Square. Originally built in two stages during the 13th and 14th centuries, it is believed to have been a royal palace, possibly for Elisabeth of Bohemia. Following its reconstruction to its original Gothic facade after years of being hidden behind Baroque additions, the building has served as an exhibition space for the Prague City Gallery since 1988. The site showcases exceptional Gothic palace architecture of a tower type, with rich decorative elements dating back to around the quarter of the 14th century. Extensive restoration efforts, particularly between 1975 and 1987, meticulously recreated its historical appearance, including restoring Gothic windows and incorporating preserved stone fragments. The house also features a lapidary in its underground sections and offers a bookstore and a café.
