Curatorial context

The Šumava Easter exhibition presents a rich collection of sacred art originating from the Šumava region, with pieces dating from the late Gothic era through to contemporary creations. A highlight of the exhibition is the significant polychrome woodcarving Pieta from Podlesí (Vogelsang), created between 1510 and 1520 and attributed to Master Oplakávání Krista ze Zvíkova, recognized as one of Czech late Gothic art's most valuable works. Beyond these historical treasures, the exhibition also features works by established contemporary artists such as Kristina Maršíková Málková, Michal Vavrečka, and Dagmar Hamsíková. Their contributions underscore the continuing relevance and vitality of Christian inspiration within today's visual arts landscape. Adding a unique dimension, the exhibition includes a high-quality, full-size replica of the Shroud of Turin, an artifact revered for its depiction of a man bearing the marks of crucifixion as described in the Gospels. Visitors can also experience local traditions, with opportunities to sample egg specialties and toast with Velvary egg cognac in the exhibition's Baroque café, playfully referencing the legend of eggs being used in the mortar for Prague's Charles Bridge.

Admission and ticket notes

The exhibition is open daily from 10:00 AM. Hours vary by month, extending later in May. Visitors can sample egg specialties in the local Baroque café.
