National Gallery of Iceland Welcomes Significant Acquisition of Works by Jóhann Eyfells and Kristín Halldórsdóttir
The National Gallery of Iceland in Reykjavík has received a substantial donation encompassing part of the creative output of artists Kristín Halldórsdóttir (1917–2002) and Jóhann Eyfells (1923–2019). Arriving via two shipping containers transported from Texas, the acquisition follows a collaborative effort between the artists' family—led by Ingólfur Eyfells—the gallery, and Eimskip. In addition to the pieces designated for the National Gallery, the Reykjavík Art Museum will also receive selected works from the estate.
Discovering the Lifelong Work of Icelandic Artists in Reykjavík
Kristín and Jóhann spent decades developing their artistic practices, largely based in Florida, where Jóhann taught for thirty years at the University of Central Florida. Following Kristín's passing, Jóhann relocated his life's work and possessions to Texas, preserving both his own creations and those of his late partner on dedicated land.
Before making their way to Iceland, a selection of Jóhann's sculptures was exhibited at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, curated by Gavin Morrison. Jóhann, who previously represented Iceland at the 1993 Venice Biennale alongside Hreinn Friðfinnsson, remains an influential figure in contemporary sculpture.
