Historical Cartography Exhibition: Iceland Mapped by Danish Authorities in Reykjavik

This exhibition provides insight into the immense, long-term mapping project that charted the topography of Iceland. Beginning with coastal surveys in the late 18th century and culminating in the ambitious mapping efforts of the early 20th century, the exhibition showcases the scientific and artistic endeavor required to define the island's geography. The project was primarily carried out by the topographical department of the Danish Army and the Danish Geodetic Survey, involving teams that navigated challenging terrain to determine coordinates and document settlements. On display are original charts, working drawings of farms, and stereographic images that highlight the meticulous nature of this work. The final products, known as the General Staff Maps, are celebrated not only for their high level of accuracy but also for their aesthetic quality. These maps remain some of the most significant representations of the Icelandic landscape, serving as a lasting record of a project that was completed in 1944, the same year Iceland became a republic.
