Established in 1981 in Salzburg, FOTOHOF grew out of the Association for the Promotion of Auteur Photography to become a **cornerstone of Austrian photography**. The institution expanded its influence in 1990 by launching an independent publishing house for artist monographs. In 2012, the gallery relocated to purpose-built premises at Inge-Morath-Platz. It further developed its regional role in 2014 by establishing a permanent archive dedicated to documenting Austrian photographers.
