Exhibition summary

Project Groundswell is a collaborative international exhibition featuring contemporary photography and film focused on climate change, sustainability, and potential solutions. Developed by four European cultural institutions, the exhibition showcases works from four award-winning photographers alongside a selection of video installations exploring our changing natural world.

Curatorial context

Project Groundswell brings together international cultural institutions—including FOTOHOF, Cortona On The Move, Imago Lisboa, and Photo Museum Ireland—to present a series of photographic and filmic positions addressing the climate crisis. Supported by Creative Europe, the project emphasizes solutions for multiple environmental challenges, inviting the public to engage with pressing sustainability issues through artistic storytelling. The exhibition features monographic works by selected artists Gonçalo Fonseca, Yvette Monahan, Ingmar Björn Nolting, and Maria Oliveira, exploring themes such as climate activism, forest regeneration, oceanic history, and traditional subsistence lifestyles. In addition to the primary featured series, the exhibition includes a curated selection of video installations by international artists, such as Oliver Ressler, Nora Schwarz, and others. These works broaden the discourse by examining topics like non-hierarchical community living in forests, the water crisis in Italy, and the societal choreography of global climate negotiations. By combining visual documentation with educational content and publications, the exhibition serves as a platform to foster deeper awareness of our relationship with nature and the urgent need for environmental protection.
