Exhibition summary

This exhibition presents the radical and highly individual work of Austrian artist Michaela Moscouw, spanning four decades of her creative practice. It features her signature large-format 'Pizza' works, which layer vintage publication imagery with her own photographic archives to create ambiguous, multi-layered visual narratives.

Curatorial context

The work of Austrian artist Michaela Moscouw, which has been developing since the early 1980s, is characterized by its radical independence and resistance to fleeting artistic trends. This exhibition at FOTOHOF highlights the unique and surprising intersections within her practice, particularly focusing on the evolution of her work as it relates to the FOTOHOF Archive. Central to the display are the 'Pizza' works from 2019, which consist of large, 160 cm diameter circular compositions. These pieces combine images from her own archive with illustrations from the 1941 publication 'Wien und ein Blick in the Alpengaue'. In these 'Pizza' works, Moscouw creates complex visual layers where historical documentation meets her long-standing photographic practice. Through the process of gluing, blending, and overlapping images, she opens a space for provocative political and ambiguous interpretations. The exhibition reveals how Moscouw approaches her own imagery with a 'malting' intensity, condensing decades of work into dense, energetic, and highly intentional visual compositions that prioritize process and visual density over clear-cut messaging.
